If you are researching this or a similar item on-line please thank those who have provided detailed information (quality, in-focus photos, drawings, measurements, history, etc.) on various websites by contributing your DETAILED information so others may benefit from your experience. Pay it forward.
This bedroll is named in clear and bright black ink stamps in multiple areas –
Melvin D. Henderson was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1940. He served in WWII, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" for heroic achievement while serving as Executive Officer, Fourth Engineer Battalion*, was a Lt. Col. at Camp Pendleton, California, in 1952, and by 1964 was a Brigadier General at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. During 1966 BGen Henderson was Commander, Fleet Marine Force – Pacific / I MAC (Fwd) at Camp Smith, Hawaii. He retired in 1966.

This is a lightweight khaki canvas WWII USMC officer’s bedroll … in VERY GOOD condition.
I did not find a USMC or maker’s stamp on the bedroll.
This piece is similar to the U.S. Army M-1935 officer’s bedroll. Some differences:
-- no exterior straps
-- no side flap straps
-- no end pockets ** © mustang1951K46 – do not copy **
-- has 4 exterior metal “D” rings
-- has interior central covering flap in addition to side flaps
This bedroll would have been paired with a canvas officer’s valise for transporting an officer’s uniforms and belongings. I have had two of these valises (both have been sold) and they are very useful (an uncommon). See the reference book “Uniforms, Insignia and Equipment of the United States Marine Corps, 1941-1945”, page 82, for an example.
92 by 30 inches wide – side flaps folded in
92 by 86 inches wide – side flaps folded out
29 inches wide – each notched side flap
83 by 30 inches wide – center flap
The central portion of the bedroll and its long covering flap are made from a single piece of canvas; the overlapping side flaps are sewn to the center section with a double row of stitches.
Each side flap is notched at the head position and contains three (3) 5/16 inch inside diameter brass grommets at each corner – head, feet, and notch. ** © mustang1951K46 – do not copy ** The central covering flap also has two (2) of these brass grommets at the head end.
Most edges are finished by being folded over and sewn down. The white stitching is tight and well-done. There are interior reinforcement panels for each exterior “D” ring and its sewn-down attaching strap.
The stitching does not “glow” in the presence of ultraviolet (UV) light, indicating the thread is NOT modern nylon and confirming its WWII origin.
The four (4) exterior-mounted steel “D” rings are positioned two (2) each at the edge of the feet end and 12 inches from the head end. Interior dimensions of the rings are 1 1/4 inches wide by 3/4 inch.
I have not used this bedroll in the field. I have used the M-1935 bedroll plenty of times. This Marine Corps bedroll weighs about 3 pounds less than the M-1935, around 7 pounds.
The bedroll is in VERY GOOD condition, with very little wear or stains. NO rips, tears, or repairs. No rust on “D” rings. It was NOT used as a drop cloth for painting.
This bedroll has NOT been stored outdoors in a lean-to shed that fell over on it. NO musty odor, just the smell of good old canvas. Always stored indoors.
Not an “estate sale” or “barn find” ……
…… this bedroll is from my personal collection.
