Vintage World War II-era sailor’s seabag – unique sewn grommets

If you are researching this or a similar item on-line please thank those who have provided detailed information (quality, in-focus photos, drawings, measurements, history, etc.) on various websites by contributing your DETAILED information so others may benefit from your experience.  Pay it forward.

DESCRIPTION

This regulation-size World War II-era white cotton canvas seabag is stamped “G.W. Peterson” in several areas.

Research found several sailors with this name who served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Here are two -

ARM3c G. W. Peterson served as a Consolidated PBY crewmember ** ©nasa21 – do not copy **

Another served in Platoon Two, Company A, 85th Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees) [stationed in the Aleutian Islands] (see group photo)

The grommets for the line closing the top of the bag are not the usual brass metal ones, but are instead sewn with thread (and nicely done too), making this a unique seabag.

Also, the interior bottom contains 4 sewn-in “clothing stops”. These lines were used to tie clothing into the bag.

“A clothes stop was an 18-inch piece of line that was crimped or lashed on both ends. Clothes stops, also known as “tie-ties”, were used to secure rolled clothing.

They were also used to secure washed clothing to a clothesline”

The exterior has been cleaned, but some stains remain. The interior is remarkably clean.

No rips, tears, or holes.

This bag has many other uses if you choose not to use it as a display piece - carry gear in it, for example.

Note the late-war “Navy gray” uniform the Chief is wearing in the group photo.
