Vintage 1961 compact E6B flight computer, a collectible novelty

This small double-sided non-electronic flight planning aid was part of the promotional effort in announcing a new Navion aircraft dealer established at the Albany State Airport (S12), Albany, Oregon, in 1961. Gene Spear was the owner, hence “Spear-it” (a play on “spirit”). ** ©nasa21 – do not copy **

Announcements appeared in the November 10, 1961, edition of the Albany Democrat-Herald newspaper and the December 1961 issue of FLYING magazine, and an ad listing dealers appeared in the February 1962 issue of the same magazine.

One side of the aid features the standard “whiz wheel” for computing time-distance-speed-fuel consumption. Wheel turns freely. Ground speed/true air speed can be read in statute MPH, knots, or kilometers per hour.

This side also contains instructions for use, as well as advertising/promotional copy:

The “Spear-it” of Aviation

Albany, Oregon

Reverse side features the standard FAA Flight Plan Form and VFR Cruising Altitudes rules.

This piece is dated 1961 by Slide-Chart Copr [Corp] / Perrygraf Corp, Maywood, Illinois. These companies also made slide rules for many types of businesses and applications.

Measures 3 5/8 by 4 1/4 inches.

This E6B is in GREAT condition, with no cracks, chips, creases, or stains. The side with the wheel is yellowed (looks white in photo but is definitely faded with age), the other side is bright white.

This vintage E6B is from my personal collection – not an “estate sale” find.
