WWI, 1918, U.S. ARMY AIR SERVICE, OBSERVER WING, STERLING, TIFFANY
Circa 1918, United States Army Air Service, Observer, half wing. In sterling silver, with "U S" in Gold letters affixed to the shield, maker marked "TIFFANY & Co", marked "STERLING". Horizontal pinback, with functional clasp, extremely fine. Weight is 12g. Between October and December 29, 1917 reserve pilots were re-designated as observers and retained this badge. The design was changed in 1918. Artistically, by WWI, Tiffany & Co. had established their reputation as America's finest silver maker. During this timeframe, under the direction of John C. Moore II, the firm was also the only American silver maker of the era to win the gold medal at the International Silver Exposition. This Tiffany & Co's badge is distinctive and demonstrates simple elegance popular among wealthy American easterners. This understated design is in stark contrast to the very fancy and stylized designs popularized by such firms as Shreeve and Co. in San Francisco. Seldom scene and very scarce Wing for the advanced Military Wing Collections.
