RARE SOUVENIR PROGRAM FOR ONE OF THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL RACIST MOVIES IN US HISTORY.
The Birth of a Nation is a 1915 American silent epic drama film, directed and co-produced by D. W. Griffith and starring Lillian Gish. The United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1992. Perhaps the most controversial motion picture of all time. It is considered extremist in its overt racism and twisted depiction of the South during reconstruction, but aesthetically and technically brilliant. A film which remains such a hot topic more than 100 years after its release that it is rarely granted screenings in movie theaters to this day.
VERY NICE COPY. Produced by Epoch Producing Corporation in 1915. Ribbon bound, embossed paper wrappers with edge wear, a bit of discoloration around front cover due to storage, nice embossed bird on a cannon decoration on back cover. Front cover portrait of the capital, embossed gilt decoration and lettering. Portrait sepia photo of D.W. Griffith as frontispiece, double-page central photo and others photos in 16 pages. 4to (12 x 9 1/2 inches).
RARE LAID-IN FLYER FOR THE "STRAND" THEATER IN ST. PAUL, "St. Pauls Elite Photo Play Theatre (Fireproof)". I'm guessing this was the Strand theater in St. Paul, Minnesota, but I can't be sure. ALSO, THIS COPY HAS THE RARE TIPPED-IN COLOR FLAT IMAGE WHICH HEADS THE CHAPTER, The Story of the Picture.
The souvenir program will be carefully packaged and sent Priority Mail.
