In 2021, Seuss's publishing interests announced the six books—And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, If I Ran the Zoo, McElligot's Pool, On Beyond Zebra!, Scrambled Eggs Super!, and The Cat's Quizzer—would no longer be published, because they “portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.”.
In, On Beyond Zebra!, the objectionable image, which some have termed an "Orientalist", is shown in a listing photo. On this page a man of no delineated race (and thus we would declare him “white,” I assume) is riding a kind of camel and has a mustache. A building in the background seems like, if anything (which it isn’t) some kind of pagoda. The man has the billowy pantaloons we would associate with an “Arab.”
This Dr. Seuss classic was first published in 1955, and THIS IS A COPY OF THE FIRST PRINTING OF THIS BOOK WITH THE RARE DUST JACKET. The key First Printing Points are: The 8-line copyright statement stating 1955 as the copyright date, the list of books on rear cover and rear dust jacket from Horton Hears a Who, to, And to Think I Saw it on Mulberry Street, and the price code, 250/250 on front flap. The front flap is price-clipped here, but a listing photo shows the beginning of the "2".
I would grade this copy as VERY GOOD OR BETTER CONDITION. The dust jacket has edge and corner wear, some chips and tears, a clipped dust jacket as noted, but it is intact and mostly clean and now handsomely portrayed in a mylar jacket. The book alone is in EXCELLENT CONDITION. Light board edge wear, mostly on bottom edge, no interior marks, clean and solidly bound colorful pages, looks barely read.
There are no questions for this listing.
